WFMW- Growing Gardeners
I come from a long lineage of good gardeners. Well maybe 2 generations, but who’s counting. My sister has the green thumb bug too. Unfortunately I have not been blessed in the gardening department. I’ve decided to be merciful to the all plants out there and just take a pass at gardening. I mean how many plants do you have to kill before you get the hint?
That was until I had kids. Baby #1 recently did a series on plants and seeds at school so I thought that this would be a fun way to reinforce what he learned and hopefully get them interested in gardening. So I bought Baby #1 and Baby #2 their own terra cota pots to plant some seeds in. First we had to paint the pots because we can’t have plain pots out on our front porch.
After the paint dried we put the soil, seeds, and water into the pots and waited. We planted them on Saturday and have been watering them every other day or so and today I saw the first signs of life!! Little sprouts are coming out.
If I had some photoshop skills I would point an arrow at the sprout because it’s really hard to see. Trust me it’s there. I planted Daliahs because they looked pretty on the seed packet and they do well in heat. I think that the difference this time is that the plants won’t forget to get watered. For one I pass them every time I go out the front door. For another the kids love to water them so they ask several times a day if it’s time. For once I won’t have a plant die of thirst.
If you have any advice for a novice gardener please leave me a comment. Even if it’s something you assume that everyone already knows- because chances are I don’t. This fun project works for me. For more great tips check out Rocks in my Dryer.

I’m a novice gardener too and I have a notoriously black thumb. We are putting in our first ‘real’ garden this year and I’ll be anxiously awaiting any great advice you get on this topic!
What cute pots! I have a black thumb, unfortunately, but I’m thinking of planting some seeds anyhow. I’ll have to get the kids involved!
I have also been blessed with a black thumb. I even killed a spider plant that my son bought me for Mother’s Day!
I was born with a black thumb that I am attempting to turn green, this year I acquired a huge plot in a community garden down the road from my house. I blog about it frequently if you want to learn from my mistakes. We have seedlings in our house and the kids are mesmerized with the seedlings, I love it too. If you wanted to see your seedlings better you could start them in something smaller… like an egg carton.

Great job!! Sounds like you and your kids are enjoying this great “green thumb” project! Isn’t it SO exciting to see the first signs of life as they begin to grow!! That’s my favorite part!
Good tip! The pots are nice and colorful. What about having them help with transplanting or splitting plants later in the year… to teach them about different ways to get new plants? Or planting something they recognize as a food, to realize they sometimes eat “seeds” such as garlic cloves etc.
I am praying for those little seedlings…..pray for mine too!
I kill everything I plant, but I know somewhere inside lurks a gardener. I just wish she would come out.
That’s a great idea. I know Abby would love a project like that.
