My Christmas Home Tour

Posted in Random, Uncategorized at 9:40 pm by canearl

I’m so excited to join The Nester’s Christmas Tour of Homes this year.  I skipped last year, but did it the year before and it was a lot of fun.  So let the tour begin!  I’ll give you a general overview of my living room where most of the decorating happened.

Here’s our Christmas tree.  I’m so glad that I took a picture right after we put it up (right before Thanksgiving) because it does not look this pretty now.  Three kids- ages 6, 4, and 3 who love to take ornaments off the tree do a number on the tree a few weeks in.

If I had to name our style this Christmas it would be arts and crafts.  My kids are in school and preschool and they come home with some really cute things that I want to showcase.  They’ll only be young once so I might as well show it off while I can.

Here’s our mantle.  I’m so happy with my Sticks and Stones picture that I just put some of the kids crafts up next to it and called it good.

Next up is our entertainment center which we have named The Beast because it’s so huge.  As much as I complain about it throughout the year- it does come in handy come Christmas because it’s where all the Christmas gifts go.  Did I mention my kids ages???

I took our Santa pictures from last year and framed them to add to the Christmas feel.  Baby #3 was not into Santa at all last year so that’s why there are no pictures of her.

To dress up our clock a little bit I just tied a bow on top and it magically looks Christmas-y.

Over our couch I used some ribbon that I bought at Target at the end of last season to make a frame to frame some more art that the kids made last year.  Just ignore the splotchy paint job.  That’s what happens when you do touch-ups with paint that’s the wrong finish.  It doesn’t look nearly as bad in person.

Last up is my favorite decoration.  I made this shadow box several years ago when Baby #1 first started pre-school.  This year I bought shadow boxes for my girls and as soon as all of their Christmas crafts come home from school this week I’ll put theirs up to display.  I also have the Christmas card from last year and this year displayed.

On to the other side of the room.  We normally put the stockings on either The Beast or the mantle, but this year I decided to change things up and bring some Christmas to this side of the room.  The kids were really concerned that Santa wouldn’t be able to get to the stockings, but we assured him that he could.  I also threw a red table-cloth over my table just to bring some more red to this side of the room.

Well that wraps up my tour.  Thanks for stopping by and I hope that you have a Merry Christmas.  To join in on the fun head over to The Nesting Place and check it out.

Designing on a Dime

Posted in Random at 1:07 pm by canearl

I can’t sing.  I can’t dance.  I can’t play any musical instruments (despite the fact that I took piano lessons for 6 years, but that’s besides the point).  One talent that I do have is taking things that are not great – sometimes even meant for trash- and turning them into things that make our house a home.

My husband and I are committed to living on a pretty tight budget so that doesn’t always leave money for decorating so I’ve had to become pretty creative and resourceful.  One of my bigger feats was lugging four dining room chairs that were set out for bulk trash pick up across a big play ground to my car and home.  You can read more about that here.

Once I got them home I asked Hubs to refinish them for me.  We have a very common butcher block dining room table that we bought at a garage sale when we first got married (which we’re planning on refinishing too).  I didn’t like 2 of the chairs that came with the table so we chunked them and built our own benches- on casters. Trouble is one of the benches is really really hard to move.  It’s been like that for years.  When I saw those chairs I knew that they were the answer to my problem.  I could replace the 2 chairs that we currently had and take out the bench and use all four of the chairs that I recovered.

Here’s the before and after:

IMG_1758

I’m not going to lie.  If I had unlimited resources that’s not the chair I would pick out in a furniture store, but if it looks 100% better than what we currently have so it works for me.

Next up we have our master bedroom.  We had a huge white dresser that I had had since high school.  The thing was probably 15 years old.  When we moved into our house I painted it white (it was a murky brown color) and swapped out the hardware so it looked decent, but it was just too big for our room.  I saw this picture in a magazine and wanted to see if I could copy it with furniture we already had.

I feel like I came pretty close.  I still need to buy some glass knobs for the smaller dresser, but I’m happy with how it turned out.  I also decided to do my nightstand while I was at it:

And yes the ugly lamp is on my to-do list.  I saw one at Target that I really like, but it’s $50 so I’m waiting for it to go on clearance.

The last project that I want to share if for those of you out there who think that you can’t do this sort of thing.  Start small.  Really small.  I found these frames (there were two) at a garage sale and knew that they’d be perfect for my kid’s rooms.

IMG_0683

I spray painted them with left over paint from previous projects, put the mats back in with pictures of my kids with their friends and now they’re hanging up in their rooms.

Garage sales, second-hand stores, flea markets, craigslist are great places to start looking for those little treasures that can really turn your house into a home.  If you need help find some frugal decorating blogs (they’re a lot of very talented women out there) to help hone your eye and expand your mind as to what’s possible.

Coming Clean

Posted in Random at 2:54 pm by canearl

I have a confession to make.  For the last 3 weeks I have not shampooed my hair.  I decided to try something different I saw on one of my favorite blogs- Simple Mom.  She said that she gave up “poo” for baking soda and water and apple cider vinegar and water (conditioner).

She gave a list of reasons why- and I was all about it.  I was totally on board.

For the first week or so it was fine.  My hair definitely didn’t feel silky and smooth, but it looked okay and my hair actually had a little more tooth to it because my hair is normally really fine.  It was nice not to have to use product to get it to do- well – anything.  This is my hair after 4 days of no shampoo:

_DSC0039.NEF

Two weeks in I was starting to think that maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.  My hair was starting to look a little more grungy and it just didn’t feel good at all.

Now I’m at about three weeks in and I had to wash my hair with shampoo.  I know that it takes 2-4 weeks to get your hair acclimated, but my vanity just can’t take it any longer.  If I could wear baseball caps to church and stuff like that I might try ot hang on another week, but the fact is I’m just really not liking my hair at all and since there’s a quick and easy fix I’m taking it.

I should probably address my non-blogging lately.  Nothing’s going on – I’m fine.  I’ve just been bored and uninspired and needed a little break.  I’m going to try to do 2-3 posts a week and see what happens.

Procrastinator’s Party- After!

Posted in Random, Uncategorized at 12:31 pm by canearl

This is my first time to participate in The Inspired Room’s Procrastinators Party and I’m so glad that Melissa is hosting this.  I know that if she didn’t my dresser would still be sitting at the top of our stairs holding a bunch of junk.  Remember this:

001 (2)

I managed to find a home for all of that stuff (and the reason I have a huge box of fruit snacks and a huge bag of Chex Mix at the top of my stars is because it’s for my son’s school- which I don’t have to take until mid-Nov!!  I managed to find a home for it in the kitchen where it should be).

I took the dresser downstairs to my workshop- also known as our garage and got to work.  First step was to prime the dresser:

004 (2)

I decided to take the easy/lazy way out and spray paint the dresser.  It doesn’t look awesome, but it looks good enough and this is a temporary solution until we get some real bedroom furniture.  Right after we replace our 12 year old tv, buy new couches, new flooring throughout the house……

017

This (below) is the overall look I was going for and by pulling in my son’s dresser I think that I got pretty close.  I do need to change the knobs on the smaller dresser- which is on my to-do list.

019

Overall I’m happy with the look and once I get some accessories to make it look pretty it will look a whole lot better.

I even managed to paint my sad nightstand!  It also needs to be accessorized better- and it needs a knob, but at least the hard part if over.

Head over to The Inspired Room to join in on the fun!

Just the Kick in The Rear I Need

Posted in Random at 12:02 pm by canearl

I usually have half a dozen projects around the house that I really want to get done.  I used to blame the fact that I couldn’t do anything because my kids were always around, but I can’t use that excuse anymore because they’re in school now.

My girls only go a few days a week, but after rambling around a few hours today I saw that Melissa at The Inspired Room is holding a Procrastinator’s Party and that’s just the jumpstart that I need to get some stuff done.

I’m not going to get all wild and crazy.  If I finish one project I’ll be happy- I might tackle two, but we’ll just see.

The thing that I really want to do is paint this dresser:

001 (2)

I know it looks so good at the top of our stairs holding all of the junk that doesn’t have a home.  Including snacks for my son’s Kindergarten class that I don’t have to take until November.

My plan is to move the dresser into the master bedroom and I’m going for this look:

IMG_NEW

My son has a dresser in his room that looks similar to the taller dresser.  I’ll just  take it from his room move it to our room and find something else to hold his clothes.

And if I get adventurous I’ll also tackle the nightstand while I”m at it:

002 (2)

If nothing else it might motivate me to replace/change the hideous lamp I’ve had for way way too long.

I’ve already got the dresser primed as I type this post up so it might just get done!  I have two weeks to finish so stay tuned.

A Tale of Four Chairs

Posted in Hubs, Random at 4:54 pm by canearl

Okay if you’ve read my blog for any length of time you probably know that I like to dumpster dive (I should clarify for people who aren’t local that it’s not technically dumpster diving because there isn’t a dumpster- people just leave their bulk items on the curb by their house).  We have bulk pick up several times a month and I use that as a oppertunity to peruse our streets and alleys looking for good stuff.

Over the summer I found these four chairs that look like this:

IMG_1178

I knew that one day in the very near future we would need some new dining room chairs- and unfortunately dining room chairs were not in the budget.  Our current chairs are hanging on with a little wood glue and a prayer.  We bought them 8 years ago at a garage sale so we had gotten every bit of use out of our $25 investment (they came with 2 other chairs that I quickly got rid of because they were ugly and the table we use for our dining room table).

You can read all about my saga of getting the chairs home here.

So my knight in shining armor, Hubs, came to my rescue and totally refurbished one of the chairs.  I’m so thankful that he did it because if I did it- it would be totally sub-par.  He did a fabulous job and I’m so happy with how it turned out.

Here’s the progression:

IMG_1740

They were all structurally sound, but in need of a very good sanding.  All of the paint was peeling off.

IMG_1738

Sanded down.

IMG_1741

Hubs is applying the stain.

IMG_1757

Here’s how they look side by side.  The one that’s finished is missing a few spindles, but we’re not that worried about it.  It adds to the charm.

IMG_1758

Once the other 3 chairs are done Hubs is going to sand and stain our kitchen table and one of the benches to match the chairs (the other bench is going in the trash because it doesn’t roll well).

I’m so happy with how it turned out and can’t wait for the entire project to be done.

32 is the New 60

Posted in Random at 9:56 am by canearl

I don’t have a problem getting older.  At least I didn’t think that I did until two incidents in the past two weeks which makes me think that maybe I’m past my prime.

Incident #1:

I was doing our weekly shopping at Kroger a few weeks ago and picked up a bottle of wine for a recipe I wanted to try.

(Side note- this is where my lack of culinary knowledge comes in.  The recipe calls for white wine so I went to the wine section and got the cheapest bottle they had.  The very next week I was getting balsamic vinegar and saw that they actually make wine that’s specifically for cooking.  Y’all know that I’m too cheap to throw away a perfectly good bottle of wine and I don’t drink wine so it will be used in the recipe and we’ll just hope for the best).

I went to pay for my groceries and saw that the bottle of wine was coming up to be scanned so I got out my drivers license.  I mean- he was wearing the button that says that they card everyone under thirty and surely I look like I’m 30 or under right?  Nope – apparently not.  He just keyed in some override that means- this lady is way over 30 and I don’t need to key in her birth date because I’m sure that she was born before electricity was invented so I can override this purchase.

(Another side note- to all of you grocery cashiers that read my blog- all none of you.  Throw a girl a bone.  If the woman isn’t a member of AARP- go ahead and card her and make her day.  I’m just sayin’.)

I admit I was a little disappointed about not being carded, but consoled myself that he was probably half blind and just couldn’t tell how young I really look.

Fast forward to last night.  I have a very part time job where I work childcare for a local church.  I got called in last minute last night and ended up working with a 16 year old girl and another woman who I’ve never met.  We were talking and the other woman (who’s older than me, but I won’t guesstimate her age because I have no idea how old she is- I just know that she’s several years older than me) asked the 16 year old if I was her mom!!!!!!!

Seriously- I almost started crying right there.  Who knew that I was so vain, but apparently I am.  I told her that- no I was not her mom and the older woman said that it was because we look a like.  16 year old has blue eyes and red hair- and doesn’t look anything like me.

I mean technically- yes I could be her mom, but I don’t think that the woman was thinking I had her at 16.  I think that she thought I was much older than I am (32 for anyone that doesn’t know).

I’m thinking that maybe I should have saved all of the money I spent on Weight Watchers and just got a face lift.

Since it’s Monday and All

Posted in Random, Uncategorized at 8:05 am by canearl

What could be better than a totally random post?  A lot of things, but you’re stuck this.  I’ve had a few random posts running through my head, but haven’t gotten around to putting them together so I’m just going to hodgepodge it today and put it all in one.

First off- I love love love thrift stores.  I know that it’s not always as easy to find stuff as it is at Target, but you can get some great deals and things that are unique that Target doesn’t sell.  Check out what I got last weekend – all for $5.00!

IMG_1247

This is my favorite find- not the game, but the dishes.  I’m sure that there’s some fancy French name for them, but I don’t know what it is.  They’re for my bathroom to hold various things.

IMG_1251

This is what Hubs did this weekend:

IMG_1281

 IMG_1282

IMG_1283

Never underestimate the power of black spray paint.  Doesn’t it look good?  Even better than how good it looks- Hubs had to admit that I was right.  He thought that the railing just needed to be replaced, but I told him that he just need to clean and spray paint it.  And guess who was right.  Not that I’ve rubbed it in or anything.

Here’s my new alarm clock.  I’ve been getting up at 5:30 AM to have my quiet time now (instead of rushing through it before I head out to walk) and in order for me to get up at such an un-Godly hour (sorry – it’s corny, but I couldn’t resist) I had to make a drastic change.  The alarm clock alone wasn’t cutting it so I moved my coffee pot into our room.

IMG_1279

It’s a little tacky, but hey- it gets me up to spend time with God- you do what you have to do.  A word about the Dickies cup- that is how I make the perfect cup of coffee.  Half a cup equals one cup of coffee- full cup equals 2 cups of coffee.  I have been known to get a little upset with Hubs when he serves the kids their milk in my Dickies cup.  I guess now that the coffee pot is upstairs we’ve alleviated that problem.

If you’re still reading- don’t worry I’m about to put you out of your misery.  I realized this morning that I am turning into my grandma.  She contributes her longevity to all of the supplements she takes (there’s probably something to it too because she’s smoked most of her life and she’s still going pretty strong).  Here’s my daily regimen:

IMG_1285

I’ll probably choke all of these pills down every day only to get hit by a car when I’m 40.  And that seems like a nice way to end this post.

Happy Monday!

A New Record May Be Set

Posted in Random at 12:56 pm by canearl

If you’re a reader here you’ll remember that a few weeks ago I finally reached my Weight Watchers goal- and maintained my weight for six weeks therefore becoming a Lifetime Member.  The only thing I have to do is stay two pounds over or under my goal weight and I can attend as many meetings as I want for free forever.

If I’m more than two pounds above or below my goal weight I have to pay weekly until I get back to may goal weight range.  Problem I’m having is I’ve been hanging out about 4 pounds below my goal weight (which is 164) and I just can’t seem to gain enough weight to be within my goal range.

Okay- I know – I’ve become one of those whiny women, “I just can’t gain weight.”  The thing is I think that my body is pretty comfortable around 160ish and I hate to try to gain 2-4 pounds just to stay within my goal range if my body is happier at 160.

So I may just go down as the shortest Lifetime Member in Weight Watchers history.  Having said that even if I don’t get to attend meetings I still plan on counting points and tracking because that’s the only way I’ll really be able to keep it off.

Now if I just happen to be in my range I’ll go up and weigh in so that I can maintain my membership as long as possible (since I only have to weigh in once a month)- if not my membership will lapse and I’ll got it on my own.

A Good Title for this Post Escapes Me

Posted in Random, Uncategorized at 1:26 pm by canearl

Since it was a balmy 75 degrees this morning I decided that it would be a good opportunity to take the kids to the park to ride bikes and not totally bake the entire time.

We live about 2 blocks from the elementary school that Baby #1 will attend next year and normally the kids will ride their bikes up there and ride bikes around the school and play on the playground.

Today I decided that it would be less hassle if we just drove up there and took the bikes with us.  I’m so glad that I did because while I was walking around the track that goes around the playground- while the kids played/rode bikes I saw 4 kitchen chairs that were set out for bulk pick up (trash day- the school has a chain link fence around the perimeter and an alley is all around the school- which is where people leave their trash out for pick up).

(The previous paragraph is a great example of why I’m glad that my old English teachers don’t read my blog.  I’m sure that that paragraph would make their skin crawl because it’s so poorly constructed.)

Now mind you- they need some serious TLC- in way of cleaning, sanding and repainting, BUT they are structurally sound which is more than I can say for 2 of our current kitchen chairs.

IMG_1178

And yes I realize that one chair has 2 spindles missing.  That’s what’s great about having mis-matched/craigslist/garage sale furniture- you can get away with stuff like that and it all fits in together.

I’m such a sucker for a good project.  A sane person would have left the chairs alone if they had about 5 different projects currently going on.  I should have waited until we

1.  Painted the kitchen so that it’s no longer “primer white.”

IMG_1180

2.  Painted the hallway where Hubs used the little bit of paint that was left after painting the kids room to paint around one of the doorways and so there’s a big brown patch surrounded by white.  Lovely. (Sorry it’s blurry)

IMG_1182

3.  Finish painting our master bedroom (it’s mostly done- just needs the tops and ceilings to be totally done).

IMG_1184

4.  Finish all the new landscaping we’ve put in.

IMG_1181

5.  Actually do something with all of our kitchen doors I saved from our kitchen remodel that I had so many projects in mind to do.  They’ve only been taking up a considerable amount of space in our garage for 8 months- not that Hubs is complaining or anything.  Ahem.

IMG_1179

I’ve come to realize that I’m most happy when I have several projects going on at once.  You know- because raising 3 kids and keeping up with life and our house isn’t quite enough excitement for me.  Thankfully I have a very tolerant and patient husband.
